The castle was built between the 10th and 11th century and suffered several fires and restores. Then, it became the center of political life and public administration during the Venetian Republic. After the fall of this republic, the castle started to decay.

After being under several administrations, the Italian Government became the owner of the building and ordered in 1923 that this building was going to be used as a public museum. In 1966, the Dodge’s Palace became part of the Civic Museums of Venice network.
